When consumer electronics are taken to landfills at the end
of their life, instead of being recycled, they wreak havoc on planet Earth.
Luckily Best Buy is taking charge to help prevent this from occurring. Best Buy is a consumer electronics retailer
that accounts for 19% of sales in the United States market. They are the largest provider of consumer electronics
on the east coast and the largest provider of cell phones in the United States.
Best Buy recognizes their corporate responsibility to make sure all these
electronics get recycled. The company website states, “Regardless of where you
bought it, what brand it is, or how old it is: bring it to us. We'll make sure
it's properly and safely recycled. “Best Buy recycles almost all electronics
including but not limited to TVs, DVD players, computer monitors, audio and
video cables, cell phones, toner cartridges, and batteries. Although at a fee,
Best Buy will even come to your home to pick up larger items such as appliances
and large TVs. Best Buy is already the world’s leader in collecting electronic
waste and has prevented more than 3,300 tons of PVC and 2,500 tons of plastic
from being used by restricting item packaging. Beginning this year in Chicago,
Houston, and San Carlos, Best Buy is launching a new service in order to help
homeowners save on energy costs. In each store there will be dedicated staff
providing help and information related to energy self-assessment tools, home
energy audits, and product installation to customers.
